Classes for 5 Year Olds in Singapore: 10 Activities, 165 Schools (2026)

21 October 2026 · 18 min read

TL;DR – The Quick Version

Across our ten age guides, 165 schools on Jungle run a class a 5-year-old can join. Barça Academy, Singapore Swimming Academy, Nullspace, The Lab and ten martial arts schools all start at 5, and most classes are drop-off. It is the K1 year, before the first ballet exams and the Primary 1 preparation classes of K2. Published prices start at $25 a class for swimming, martial arts and dance. Browse activities for 5 year olds on Jungle.

Five is a year of starting lines. Barça Academy and JSSL take footballers from 5, Singapore Swimming Academy starts its SwimSafer classes in K1, and Nullspace and The Lab open their first robotics classes for 5 and 6. Ten martial arts schools, from Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to Fight Academy, start at 5, and so do L5 by O School's graded hip hop and Dancepointe's classical ballet.

It is also the K1 year, when classes start to point at Primary 1. Ballet moves into Pre-Primary, a step before the first exam grade, and Chinese adds characters and, at Beijing and Tien Hsia, the first Hanyu Pinyin. The P1 preparation classes follow in K2. Most classes are now drop-off, though MYC Orchard still asks a parent to sit in on its keyboard lessons.

This hub covers ten activities and the 165 schools on Jungle that run a class a 5-year-old can join, taken from our ten age guides. Every school in them was checked on its own website, timetable or fee sheet between 7 and 16 October 2026. For each activity we say what a class looks like at 5, and show the two or three schools whose class for this age is clearest.

Gymnastics and art have no guide for 5 yet. Our gymnastics and art guides stop at 4, but their research shows classes that carry on past 5, such as GIM Sports' KinderGIM (4 to 6), GymKraft's KinGym (3 to 7), Da Little's Little Crafters (4 to 6) and Joyme's Creative Art (4 to 7).

Start with the summary and the readiness checklist, then go to the activity you are weighing up. Each section ends with a link to the full guide, where every school is listed by area. If your child is still 4, our hub of classes for 4 year olds covers the year before.

What Classes Should a 5 Year Old Do?

Start with one class your child is keen on, such as swimming, football or martial arts if they love to move, or ballet, music, hip hop or coding if they would rather make something, and book a trial first: every activity below has schools that take 5-year-olds and offer one.

Is your 5-year-old ready for a class?

  • They can be left with a teacher for 45 minutes to an hour. At 5 most classes here are drop-off, and Singapore Swimming Academy says children must be left with the coach. If not yet, choose one that keeps you close: MYC Orchard asks a parent to sit in on its keyboard classes, and Fun Splash asks parents to stay at the pool.
  • They can follow a group instruction for an hour or more. Classes here run from 25 minutes of one-to-one singing at The Vocal Studio to 90 minutes of hip hop at L5 and two hours of K1 Chinese at Hua. If not yet, start shorter: Ballet Quarter's Pre-Primary is 45 minutes and Nullspace's Little Explorer an hour.
  • They cope in a group. Groups run from one to one at Play By Ear and The Vocal Studio to 10 at Fun Splash and 12 in Beijing's K1 Chinese class. If not yet, look for a small one: The Lab's Kinder class keeps one teacher to four, and Nullspace at most five a teacher.

If one of the three is not there yet, a trial will tell you more than any checklist. Of the schools below, Barça Academy, Technique Pro, The Lab and NK Robotics run free trials or tryouts, and I Can Read a free assessment. Elsewhere published trials cost $20 (Dancepointe) to $80 or more (Creative Campus).

Ballet

At 5, ballet is one step before the exam grades. Ballet Quarter, City Ballet, Swan, The Ballet School and Amy's run a Pre-Primary or preschool level for this age, Singapore Ballet Academy puts 5 and 6-year-olds in Pre-Primary Year 2, and Dancepointe's classical ballet starts at 5. Others pair ballet with other styles: All That Jazz splits 90 minutes between ballet, jazz and tap, and Dance At The Difference and Elevate mix it with jazz or modern.

All 20 schools in our ballet guide for 5 and 6 take a 5-year-old. Four publish a fee for a class this age can join, from $31 a class for Yan's Pre-Primary to $59 for City Ballet's 90-minute Pre-Primary, which takes children born in 2021.

Of the schools that say, only Swim Masters still wants a parent in the water at 5, and only at weekends.

All 26 schools in our swimming guide take a 5-year-old. Eighteen publish a fee for a weekday class this age can join, from $25 (Fun Splash, Swim Masters at Senja-Cashew, Smileswimmers, and Friendly Dolphin in a group of six or more) to $47 at OtterSwim. Football

At 5, every academy in our football guide takes your child, including the two that start here. Barça Academy's weekly training is for ages 5 to 16, and JSSL's Next Gen Under-5 and Under-6 groups train for 90 minutes at its Balestier HQ. Parents step back: Lion City Sailors' Under-4 to Under-6 groups ask them to watch from outside the training area. Sessions run 60 to 90 minutes, except F17's two hours.

All nine academies take a 5-year-old. Five publish a clear rate for this age, from $35 a session at Lion City Sailors to about $49 at JSSL and EuroAsia.

Chinese

At 5, Chinese means K1: writing characters, and for some, the first Hanyu Pinyin. Beijing's K1 class writes single characters and the child's own name and starts Pinyin initials and finals, with homework expected. Tien Hsia's K1 reads and writes each lesson's characters, with Pinyin from the second half of the year, and HaHa's moves to retelling stories and short sentences. Hua's K1 class runs two hours.

Thirteen of the 14 schools in our Chinese guide take a 5-year-old; Han Hai starts at 6. Fees are rare: Kumon charges $170 a month, Berlitz $83 to $95 for a one-to-one lesson, and The Eton Academy $85 to $98 for a K2 lesson.

English

At 5, children move from blending sounds to reading. Learning Journey's Advanced phonics, for 5 to 7, works on blends and longer sentences, and LCentral's LiftOff Learn-to-Read starts in K1. My English School and I Can Read place children by a free assessment rather than by age, so a 5-year-old's course depends on what they can already read.

Eight of the nine schools in our English guide take a 5-year-old; Megaphonics states no ages. Three publish fees for this age: Kumon at about $21 a session, Berlitz at $90 to $105 a lesson, and United Language Centre at $102.

A free literacy assessment places each child. Reading Foundations moves from the first sound in words to blending three and four sounds, and Champion Readers, a one-year programme of six levels, teaches decoding with I Can Read's own marks over letters, then removes them, with a spelling test each lesson. In K2, Headstart to Primary 1 adds comprehension, grammar, writing and presenting. Lesson length, class size and fees are not published.

P1 preparation

P1 preparation belongs to K2, the year after K1, and children start K2 at 5. Seven of the 15 schools in our guide teach Chinese, six English and two all three subjects; Learning Journey and The Eton Academy run its only K2 maths classes. Primary 1 starts on Monday 4 January 2027, and the year-end holidays before it, from 21 November, are when the bridging courses run.

Only two schools publish K2 fees: Creative Campus from $83 a lesson before GST, and The Eton Academy at $85.02 to $98.10 with GST.

Creative Campus

Creative Campus sells its K2 English class as a head start on Primary 1, moving, it says, 20 to 30% faster than the standard MOE pace. Lessons work on reading, spelling, vocabulary and clear speaking and writing, and homework is marked and returned with feedback. Classes are hybrid, so a child can join over Zoom. The only fixed K2 slot is at its East campus in Parkway Parade, which is not yet on Jungle; Orchard times are on request.

Times: Sunday 5.30pm to 7pm at the East campus. Other slots on request; a class can start with two children.
Price: From $83 for a 1.5-hour lesson before GST ($90.47 with GST).

What changes at 6

At 6 a child is in K2, and Primary 1 starts in the January after: children born in 2020 start on Monday 4 January 2027. The exam tracks begin too. In ballet, Primary is the first RAD exam grade at Ballet Quarter, City Ballet and Swan, often with two classes a week, and Charlotte Marn makes ABT exams compulsory from 6. Amy's makes its ATOD exams compulsory from Preschool 3, for 6 to 7, in ballet and jazz alike.

Elsewhere gradings and exams are mostly optional. Mandeville calls 6 a suitable age for a first piano exam, Yamaha's Piano Course for Children starts at 6, and Taeseong grades at the end of each term after at least 10 lessons. In the pool, Singapore Swimming Academy's Flagship pools test SwimSafer every quarter. And at 7, Scratch on a computer starts at Nullspace, Coding Lab and Computhink, and most martial arts schools move children into their main kids' class.

How we picked these

Every school here is listed on Jungle and comes from one of our ten age guides, where each school was checked on its own website, timetable, fee sheet or booking system: ballet, football, Chinese, English and martial arts on 7 October, P1 preparation on 12 October, and swimming, music, coding and hip hop on 16 October 2026.

We count a school as taking a 5-year-old if it runs a class a child can join while 5, including classes that start at five and a half. K2 classes count, because children start K2 at 5. A school in two guides, such as Kumon, counts once in the total.

For each activity we show the two or three schools whose class for this age is clearest on four points: its name, its length, whether you stay, and its price. Where we had a choice, we picked schools not shown in our hubs for 3 and 4-year-olds. That is our judgement, not a ranking, and the full guides list every school by area.
