Swimming Lessons for 4, 5 and 6 Year Olds in Singapore: 26 Schools (2026)

16 October 2026 · 16 min read

TL;DR – The Quick Version

We checked every school Jungle lists for swimming at ages 4 to 6 against its own website, and 26 run a class a child that age can join. At 4, five schools still put a parent in the water and 11 say a child swims without one. By 5, 45-minute lessons and the SwimSafer syllabus become common. A weekday group lesson costs $25 to $47 at the 19 schools that publish a clear price, and 20 work towards SwimSafer. Browse swimming lessons for kids on Jungle.

Between 4 and 6, swimming lessons change shape. The parent leaves the water, lessons get longer, and SwimSafer, the national water-safety award, comes into view. When each happens depends on the school, not the child. At Happy Fish a 4-year-old still has a parent in the pool; at Little Splashes children have swum without one since 3. A lesson lasts 30 minutes at State Swim and 55 at Swimfast.

This guide covers the 26 schools on Jungle that run swimming lessons a 4, 5 or 6-year-old can join. We checked each one on its own website, timetable or fee page on 16 October 2026. Every card says when the parent leaves the water, the group size and lesson length, whether the class works towards SwimSafer, the pool, what happens when lightning stops a lesson, and the real price of a lesson where the school publishes it.

Start with what changes between 4 and 6, what a lesson costs and the three quick picks. After that the schools are grouped by area, then the coaches who teach at your pool, and last the six schools with several pools. For younger children, see our guide to swimming lessons for babies and toddlers.

At 4, some schools still want you in the water. Happy Fish, Isplash, Friendly Dolphin and aquaDucks keep a parent in the pool for a 4-year-old's first classes, and Swim Masters does at weekends until 5. Little Splashes, OtterSwim, SwimShark and Red Dot Penguins let go by 3, Swish at 3.5, and State Swim takes new swimmers from 4 in classes of four. Twelve schools keep lessons at this age to 30 minutes.

At 5, lessons get longer and SwimSafer starts. Happy Fish's Kid class, aquaDucks' Learn to Swim stages, Friendly Dolphin's Penguin class and Little Fishes' kids' group all run 45 minutes from 5. Singapore Swimming Academy takes its first pupils at 5, on the SwimSafer 2.0 syllabus, and Isplash moves children up at 4.5. Groups grow too: from five to six at aquaDucks, and from six to eight at Isplash.

At 6, the first SwimSafer test is in reach. Happy Fish says most children are ready for SwimSafer from about 5 to 6, and Singapore Swimming Academy that a 5-year-old takes about a year to reach Stage 1. Penguin moves 6-year-olds to its Beginner level. Little Splashes' Pre-Squad and Fun Splash's Developmental Squad both open at 6, for children who already swim several strokes.

Is your child ready for group swimming lessons?

  • They will put their face in the water, or will try with a coach. If not yet, choose a class where you can still get in, such as Happy Fish's or Isplash's toddler class, or one for nervous children: Swish's Zuma Stressless or Marsden's Beginner Program.
  • They can follow a coach for half an hour without you beside them. Many classes for 5-year-olds are 45 minutes and drop-off, so if not yet, start with a 30-minute class.
  • They cope with cool water. None of the public-pool schools here says its pool is heated, and The Swim Starter suggests a thermal swimsuit for children under 8. If your child feels the cold, choose an indoor heated pool such as Happy Fish, Little Splashes, State Swim, OtterSwim or Inspire.

A trial will tell you more than any checklist. Five schools offer one free: Red Dot Penguins, The Swim Starter, Little Fishes, SG Sink Or Swim and Swim Hub at some pools. Swim Masters charges $10 until the end of 2026.

What Age Can My Child Start SwimSafer?

Your child can start SwimSafer at 5, the age Singapore Swimming Academy recommends for Stage 1, and Isplash's Stage 1 group starts at four and a half.

Singapore Swimming Academy starts children at 5, in K1, on the SwimSafer 2.0 syllabus. Friendly Dolphin's Penguin class, Little Fishes' kids' group and Sttitude's Beginner levels also work towards Stage 1 from 5. In these classes the parent is out of the water: Friendly Dolphin has parents watching from the side, and Singapore Swimming Academy asks you to leave your child with the coach.

The first test comes later. Singapore Swimming Academy says a 5-year-old takes about a year to reach Stage 1, and Happy Fish says most children are ready for SwimSafer from about 5 to 6. None of the schools here says the test is compulsory, and six schools teach their own levels instead.

What a lesson costs

The price follows the pool more than the teaching. A weekday group lesson at an outdoor public pool costs $25 to $35, plus pool entry, which six public-pool schools here say is extra. In a school's own heated pool it costs $39 to $47, and one to one at your condo, $70 to $100.

WhereWeekday lessonSchools
Public pool, group$25 to $35Fun Splash, Swim Masters, Friendly Dolphin, Isplash, Sttitude, The Swim Starter, Little Fishes
Own heated pool, group$39 to $47State Swim, Happy Fish, aquaDucks, Little Splashes, Swish, Marsden, Inspire, OtterSwim
Private, your pool$70 to $100Swim Hub, Swim Monkey, Penguin

Weekends cost more in heated pools: $51.50 at aquaDucks Queenstown, $54.50 at Happy Fish and $63.20 at Little Splashes on a term. Registration runs from nothing at Isplash to $80 plus GST at Red Dot Penguins. For a year's budget, pool entry and SwimSafer test fees, see what swimming lessons cost in Singapore.

Little Splashes Aquatics

Little Splashes gives a nervous beginner the warmest start. Children Foundation takes children from 3 who cannot yet swim a stroke, in 30-minute classes of five, in indoor heated pools. Parents watch through glass, not from the pool deck. The $45 trial counts towards a four-class bundle if you sign up within a week, and six of its seven pools are on Jungle.

Price: $497.05 for a 12-lesson weekday term ($41.40 a class), GST included, plus $54.50 registration. Trial $45.

Singapore Swimming Academy

Singapore Swimming Academy

Sengkang Swimming Complex, one of Singapore Swimming Academy's Flagship pools. Photo: Jungle

Singapore Swimming Academy is built around SwimSafer from the first lesson. Children start at 5 on the SwimSafer 2.0 syllabus, and its Flagship classes at Bukit Canberra, Yishun and Sengkang hold tests every quarter. The test is optional and does not hold a child back. The path runs from Stage 1 to Gold, then to Singapore Swimming Proficiency Award timings. The academy is frank that a 5-year-old takes about a year to reach Stage 1.

Price: From $120 a month for a weekly 45-minute class, up to four lessons a month, with free registration. No trial.

Ages 3 to 6Up to 6No parent in the water$47 a class

Otter is a child's first class without a parent, for ages 3 to 6. Children learn safe entry, put their whole face in, blow bubbles and float front and back with help, then move to kickboards and noodles. Parents watch from a full-length glass gallery. Children who doggy-paddle 5 to 7 metres move to Advance Otter, then Seal. OtterSwim does not say how long an Otter lesson is; its FAQ says 30 or 45 minutes, by class.

Classes: Otter Levels 1 and 2, then Advance Otter and Seal. OtterSwim trains children for SwimSafer, but the tests are held elsewhere.
Pools: Its own twin indoor pools, heated to about 30 to 32°C, so lessons run rain or shine. Make-ups need notice before class and an MC; the term package includes two replacement lessons and the monthly package none.

From 345 min, up to 10Parent in the water at weekends to 5$25 a class

The Children's Group Swim Class is 45 minutes, with beginners in groups of seven or eight and two coaches splitting beginners from stronger swimmers. At weekends a parent must be in the water with children aged 2 to 5, so a 4-year-old swims with you on Saturdays and a 6-year-old does not. Children learn safe entry, putting their face in, floating, kicking and gliding, then strokes and SwimSafer survival skills.

Classes: Children's Group Swim Class, aligned with SwimSafer 2.0. When the coach says a child is ready, parents book and pay for the SwimSafer test themselves.
Pools: Outdoor public pools; heating is not stated. If the pool closes, land drills replace the lesson, and a make-up is allowed only if no water lesson was held and your child attended. At most one make-up per four lessons, with a valid reason.
Price: $100 for four lessons at Senja-Cashew ($25 a class), or $120 at Delta ($30), which is not yet on Jungle. New students on the monthly plan also pay $55 for equipment and a $100 deposit. Pool entry is extra.

Ages 4 to 630 min, 45 at 6No parent in the water$45 a class

Penguin teaches the Swim School International preschool levels. Preschool I, for 4 to 5, covers bubbles, face floats, supported back floats, kicking on a board and first windmill arms, aiming for 3 metres. Preschool II, for 5 to 6, adds rollover breathing and back glides, aiming for 6 metres. Lessons are 30 minutes to age 5 and 45 from 6, in groups of four to six or smaller. Price: $360 per child for eight lessons in a group of four to six ($45 a class), valid 12 weeks, or $800 one to one ($100). The same price covers 30 and 45-minute lessons. Paid in advance by PayNow or bank transfer.

Ages 3 to 5, then 4 to 630 or 45 min, 4 to 6No adult in the water$40 a class

WaterStarters, for 3 to 5, is SwimShark's first class without an adult: 30 minutes for four at most, climbing in and out unaided, going under on command, assisted floats and jumping to the coach. Level 1, for confident 4 to 6-year-olds, is 45 minutes for up to six and works on kicking, gliding, side breathing and first breaststroke and freestyle. Nothing on the site is dated 2026, so check classes are running.

Classes: WaterStarters, then Level 1, then Level 2 from 5 for children who already swim 25 metres. SwimShark teaches its own levels, not SwimSafer.
Pools: Outdoor condo pools; heating is not stated. Classes run at four condos, or SwimShark will start one at yours. Heavy rain, thunder or lightning cancels a class, with a credit or make-up if less than half of it ran. Absences earn a make-up or up to two credits next term.
Price: $40 a class, paid for the whole term in advance (about ten weeks), pro-rated if you join mid-term.
Trial: The first class can be a trial, at the usual $40.

Pools: Your condo or landed home's pool, or about 26 public pools; heating is not stated. Lightning or heavy rain means dry-land drills under shelter or a new date; the full weather policy is not published.
Price: Kids: $280 a month for four one-to-one 45-minute lessons ($70 a lesson); $360 for one coach to two, $420 to three and $480 to four, without saying whether that is per child. Toddler and public-pool group fees are not published.

Red Dot Penguins Swim School

3 pools on Jungle

From 2.545 min, up to 6No parent in the waterFirst lesson free

Learn to Swim takes children from 2.5 and moves them on by readiness rather than age. The first lesson is a free 45-minute assessment; then each child follows a pathway through floating, balance, breath control and safe entry and exit, towards all four strokes. Toddler levels have four children a coach, and Foundation and Intermediate six. Almost every slot is at the weekend. Each module ends with a certificate, and racing is optional.

Classes: Learn to Swim on the school's own curriculum, aligned with Australian standards; not tied to SwimSafer. Race Team for those who want it.
Pools: A heated, sheltered 25-metre pool at St Andrew's Autism Centre in Siglap, the YMCA's rooftop pool on Orchard Road and the SJI International school pool; heating at the last two is not stated. In heavy rain or lightning a class waits 10 minutes, then is cancelled with a make-up token, unless it has run 30 minutes. Cancel 60 minutes ahead for a token.
Branches: East: Siglap. City: YMCA @ One Orchard. Central: SJI International. ACS (Barker) is not yet on Jungle.
Price: The fee page lists $150 a month, "valid for 4 weeks", plus GST, without saying how many lessons that covers. $80 registration before GST. Contact them to confirm.
Trial: The first lesson is free.

Singapore Swimming Academy

4 public pools on Jungle

From 545 minDrop-offFrom $120 a month

Singapore Swimming Academy starts children at 5, in K1, on the SwimSafer 2.0 syllabus. Every beginner starts with breaststroke, and to be ready for Stage 1 a child must show survival backstroke and breaststroke over 10 metres. Children practise without goggles and learn to use a lifejacket. They are grouped by level, not age, and the academy publishes no class size and no trial. Children must be left with the coach, without a parent beside them.

Classes: Kids Group Class towards SwimSafer Stage 1, then Stages 2 to Gold and SSPA timings. The Flagship classes at Bukit Canberra, Yishun and Sengkang hold tests every quarter; the test is optional.
Pools: Outdoor public pools; heating is not stated. In lightning the pool closes and children exercise under shelter, with no make-up. Absences are made up only with an MC.
Branches: North: Bukit Canberra, Yishun. North-east: Sengkang. West: Choa Chu Kang. About 20 more public pools are not on Jungle.
Price: From $120 a month for a weekly 45-minute class, with free registration. The fee page gives no lesson count; the terms say no lesson runs in a fifth week, so a month is up to four lessons. Pool entry is extra.
Trial: No trial class.

What changes at 7

From about 6 or 7, lessons move from learning to swim to learning strokes. Friendly Dolphin's Turtle class starts at 7, Swish's Zuma Stroker at about 7, and OCBC Aquatic Centre's intermediate class at 6 for children who already swim 25 metres. aquaDucks starts competitive training at 8, and Swimfast moves children who finish its five Learn to Swim levels into its Learn-To-Train squad.

SwimSafer runs in six stages, from Stage 1 to Gold, and none of the schools here says the test is compulsory. Sttitude runs tests twice a year, Little Splashes twice a year with an outside partner, and Singapore Swimming Academy's Flagship classes every quarter. At most others, the coach says when a child is ready and a test slot is booked. For the test fee, see our cost guide.

How we picked these

Every school here is listed on Jungle. We checked each school Jungle lists for swimming at these ages on its own website, timetable or fee page, and kept the 26 that run a class a 4, 5 or 6-year-old can join and are still trading. A school whose website could not be read, and two whose newest class details are years old, are left out.

The quick picks are our judgement: a warm indoor pool, small classes and a trial that counts towards fees for a first-timer; the lowest published price with GST included for value; and the clearest SwimSafer route for a child who wants to go further. Fees, ages and timetables were read on 16 October 2026.
