Ballet Classes for 5 and 6 Year Olds in Singapore: 20 Schools (2026)

8 October 2026 · 12 min read

TL;DR – The Quick Version

We checked every school Jungle lists for ballet at ages 5 and 6 against its own website, and 20 run a class for children this age. At 5 most children join a Pre-Primary class or a ballet class mixed with jazz. At 6 several schools start the first exam, and some add a second class a week. Graded exams are compulsory at three schools and optional at four. Only four schools publish term fees, from $31 to $59 a class. Browse dance classes for kids on Jungle.

At 5 and 6, most ballet schools in Singapore start the first exam syllabus. What that means for your child varies far more than the label. Charlotte Marn School of Dance makes exams and exam coaching mandatory from 6. Elevate Dance Academie requires an exam to move up a level. M.A Ballet says RAD exams are optional, but asks 5-year-olds in its own Étude programme to come twice a week. Dance At The Difference has no exams at all.

This guide covers the 20 schools on Jungle that run a ballet class for children aged 5 or 6. We checked each one on its own website, timetable or fee sheet on 7 October 2026. Every card says which class a child this age joins, how long it runs, the exam route that starts here and what it costs where the school publishes it. Most schools do not publish fees, and the cards say so.

Start with the summary of what changes between 5 and 6, then the three quick picks. After that every school is grouped by area, with the chains at the end. If your child is younger, our guide to ballet classes for 2, 3 and 4 year olds covers 21 schools.

At 5, most children are one step before the exam grades. Singapore Ballet Academy puts 5 and 6-year-olds in Pre-Primary Year 2, an hour a week. Ballet Quarter, City Ballet, Swan, The Ballet School and Amy's all run a Pre-Primary or preschool level for this age. Several schools mix ballet with other styles: All That Jazz splits 90 minutes between ballet, jazz and tap, and Tanglin Arts, Dance At The Difference and Elevate pair it with jazz or modern.

At 6, the first exam arrives. City Ballet's Primary class takes its first RAD exam, with an extra coaching class from October. Swan's Primary level ends with an exam. Charlotte Marn makes ABT exams compulsory from 6, and Amy's makes its ATOD exam compulsory from Preschool 3, for ages 6 to 7. Danspirations, All That Jazz, M.A Ballet and Singapore Ballet Academy say exams are optional.

A second class a week often comes with the exam. Ballet Quarter asks for two classes a week from Primary. Singapore Ballet Academy adds a second lesson from September of the Primary year, and Yan asks Pre-Primary exam candidates to come twice a week for the two terms before an April exam. M.A Ballet's Étude 1 is twice a week from the start.

Is your child ready for an exam class?

  • They can concentrate for 45 to 60 minutes and take a correction from the teacher. If not yet, a mixed ballet and jazz class keeps more variety in the hour.
  • You know whether you want exams. If not, choose a school where they are optional, or Dance At The Difference, which has none.
  • The family can manage two classes a week in the exam year. If not, ask before you enrol, because several schools here require it.

If you are unsure, a trial class will tell you more than any checklist. Four schools here run free trials: City Ballet Academy, Le Grand, The Dance Place and, for a limited time, Cheng Ballet Academy.

Quick picks

The Dance Place

The Dance Place

Primary Ballet is an hour-long RAD class for ages 5 to 6, and it runs four times a week this term, including Saturday afternoon. The trial is free, and the teacher places each child in a level after it, so a beginner is not pushed into a class that is too hard. It is at Forum on Orchard Road. The catch is that fees and the school's exam rules are not published.

The fees are from Term 2 2026, the latest the school has put online.

Price: $340 for an 11-lesson term (about $31 a class, GST included), from Term 2 2026. $60 registration per family and a $200 refundable deposit. Trial $31.

Singapore Ballet Academy publishes the clearest route into RAD exams for this age. Children aged 5 and 6 join Pre-Primary Year 2, an hour once a week. Primary follows with the first RAD exam in April, and the timetable shows exactly when the second weekly lesson starts. Every class is 60 minutes. There is no trial: new children attend a placement class and are assessed first.

What changes at 7

From about 7, most schools move children into RAD Grade 1. Ballet Quarter teaches Grades 1 to 5 from 7, The Dance Place starts Grade 1 at 7 to 8, and M.A Ballet's RAD Grade 1 is for 7 to 8. Charlotte Marn moves on through the ABT levels with exams still compulsory, and Cheng's Ballet 1 is 90 minutes.

The second class a week usually becomes a rule. Singapore Ballet Academy and M.A Ballet require two classes a week for Grade 1, and Cheng makes two compulsory from Ballet 1. If you want ballet as a hobby without exams, ask before you enrol. Danspirations, All That Jazz and M.A Ballet say exams are optional, and Dance At The Difference has none.

How we picked these

Every school here is listed on Jungle. We checked each school Jungle lists for ballet at these ages on its own website, timetable or fee sheet, and kept the 20 that run a ballet class for children aged 5 or 6 and are still trading. Where a class mixes ballet with jazz, tap or modern, the card says so.

The quick picks are our judgement: a free trial with the most published slots for a class named for this age, the lowest published price per class, and the clearest published route into RAD exams. Fees, trials and timetables were read on 7 October 2026.
