Singapore Music Lessons: A Parent's Guide

4 November 2026 · 18 min read

TL;DR – The Quick Version

We checked the music schools Jungle lists on their own websites on 4 November 2026 and kept 37 that run regular lessons for children. Group keyboard and piano start at 3 or 4, one-to-one piano and violin at 4 or 5, and guitar anywhere from 5 to 9, though a few schools take 3-year-olds for drums and ukulele. A 30-minute one-to-one lesson costs $43 to $70 where fees are published, and a group class $40 to $61. An ABRSM Grade 1 exam is $304. Browse music classes on Jungle.

The instrument sets the starting age more than the child does. Rocktone Music Academy in Bukit Timah takes 3-year-olds for drums and ukulele, but makes them wait until 7 for guitar. Fisherman Music School in Sin Ming starts piano at 4 and violin, cello and flute at 7. Mandeville Conservatory takes children for individual piano at 5 and for guitar at 9.

This guide covers the 37 music schools on Jungle that run regular lessons for children, each checked on its own website, fee page or booking system on 4 November 2026. Every card says which instruments the school teaches, from what age, one-to-one or in a group, and what it costs. Fewer than half publish their fees, and the cards say so plainly when a school does not.

Start with what to learn at which age, then the instrument guide, group or private, exams and fees. The quick picks and every school by area follow, with a fees table at the end. If you already know the age or the question, go straight to the guide that answers it:

What to learn at which age

Under 3Music and movement with a parent, 30 to 45 minutes
3 to 4Group music, a first keyboard, drums or ukulele at a few schools
4 to 6Group keyboard and piano courses, a first one-to-one lesson
5 to 7One-to-one piano and violin at many schools
6 to 9Drums, guitar and wind band instruments
Group class$40 to $61 a class, at the six schools that publish
One-to-one, 30 min$43 to $70, at the five schools that publish
ABRSM Grade 1 exam$304 face to face; Trinity's is $279

Under 3, a class is music and movement, and a parent stays. Creative Hearts' Musical Babies takes babies from 6 months for 30 minutes, and Learn 2 Play's Toddlers' Music Playgroup runs 30 minutes for 18 to 36 months. Fun Melodia's Little Tots starts at 2, MYC's Sunrise is for 2 to 3, and Yamaha's Explorer takes 3-year-olds with a parent alongside. Our toddler guide compares every class for this age.

At 3 and 4, most schools offer a group, not a teacher of your own. Cristofori's I CAN PLAY puts 3.5 to 5-year-olds at the piano in groups of two or three. Joy Waltz Academy's Little Pianist Prodigy starts at 3 in groups of three to six, and Bloom's Tutti Keyboard at 4 in groups of up to four. Aureus is the exception: it teaches mostly one-to-one, from 2.5.

From 5, one-to-one lessons open up. Cristofori, Learn 2 Play, Bloom, Mandeville and The Music Circle all start individual piano at 5, and Yamaha's one-to-one Piano Course at 5.5. Violin starts at 4 or 5 at Liberal, Creative Hearts, LVL and Cristofori, and at 6 at Joy Music Studio and The Music Circle.

From 6 or 7, the heavier instruments arrive. Yamaha's Junior Drum takes 6 to 12, Cristofori and Mandeville start drums at 6, and guitar starts at 6 at Fisherman, 7 at Rocktone and Learn 2 Play, and 8 at Fun Melodia. Band Academy's wind band beginners start at 7.

Which instrument, and from what age?

Piano and keyboard

Piano is where most children start, and the schools disagree on when. Liberal says a child can start as early as 3, while Stradivari Strings says ideally 6, because younger hands may not have the strength to press the keys. Most of the schools here start one-to-one piano at 4 or 5. Melodious, Artists Music Studio, Rocktone and Groove take 4-year-olds, Nousound and Fun Melodia 4.5.

You will need something to practise on. Stradivari says you should ideally have a piano at home, and Play By Ear suggests a full-size, weighted keyboard, for which it says under $1,000 is usually enough. Cristofori rents pianos from $100 a month before GST.

Violin and cello

Violins come in fractional sizes, so children can start small. Liberal starts violin at around 4 to 5 on a 1/16 or 1/10 size, and LVL says many children can begin from around 4. Cristofori and Learn 2 Play take violin pupils from 5, Joy Music Studio and The Music Circle from 6, and Fisherman from 7.

Cello comes later at most schools. LVL starts it at around 4 to 6, and Stradivari at 5 on a 1/8 size cello, moving to 1/4 at 7 to 9. LVL rents instruments, so you do not have to buy one before you know the child will stay.

Guitar and ukulele

Ukulele is the light, cheap way in. Rocktone and Stradivari take children from 3, Liberal from 4, Fun Melodia from 5 and Mandeville from 6, with a parent in the lesson below that age.

Guitar needs bigger hands. Cristofori and Fasosola's Kinder Guitar start at 5, Fisherman and Yamaha's Pop Guitar for Kids at 6, Rocktone and Learn 2 Play at 7, Fun Melodia at 8 and Mandeville at 9. Stradivari puts electric guitar at 8 or 9, because of the weight.

Drums

Drums start younger than parents expect. Rocktone takes 3-year-olds, and Drum Tutor's Ankle Biter course teaches 4 to 6-year-olds on junior kits, with a parent sitting in for the first four lessons. Aureus says most children start drums at 4 or 5. Cristofori, Yamaha, Joy Music Studio and Mandeville start at 6, and Mandeville adds "depending on the student's height".

Noise is the real question in an HDB flat. Trinity now accepts electronic drum kits for its digital Rock & Pop drum exams at every grade, so a kit with headphones is no barrier to grades.

Singing

Singing lessons for young children are short. The Vocal Studio teaches children under 8 in 25-minute one-to-one lessons, against 50 minutes for older students. MADDspace runs singing classes for 3 to 18, Mandeville's Children Group Singing starts at 4, and 555 Beatbox teaches beatboxing, music made with the voice alone, from 5 to 16.

Wind band instruments

Band Academy Singapore teaches flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and percussion to complete beginners from 7. Its Foundation Programme lets a child try several instruments before it recommends one. Mandeville takes woodwind and brass pupils from 9.

Group or private lessons?

A group class is cheaper, but the gap is smaller than it looks. At LVL, a beginner group piano lesson is $45 for 30 minutes against $65 one-to-one. At Mandeville, Piano Group is $196 a month against $225 a month for a 30-minute individual lesson. Yamaha's group Primary Course works out at $49 a class.

Groups for young children are small. Cristofori's I CAN PLAY runs in twos and threes, Bloom's Tutti Keyboard takes four at most, SmallGiant's small groups three or four, and Joy Waltz Academy's piano groups three to six. A group moves at its own pace, not your child's.

Community clubs are the cheapest route, and some one-to-one lessons there cost less than a group. On onePA, West Coast CC lists one-to-one Piano Grade 1 at $216.70 for eight 45-minute lessons, about $27 each. Costa Ris RN's Fun with Keyboard, for 5 to 13, is $216 for eight one-hour group lessons. A beginner ukulele course at Ang Mo Kio-Hougang Raintree RN is $100 for eight hours.

The catch is supply: many one-to-one slots show one vacancy, and several say "existing student only". Search the onePA course list rather than saving a course link.

Music exams: ABRSM, Trinity and the rest

Exams are optional. ABRSM's own rules let a child start at any grade and skip grades, and Groove says many of its students skip exams altogether. The catch comes at Grade 6: ABRSM will not book Grades 6 to 8 until a child has passed Grade 5 in music theory, practical musicianship or a jazz grade. Trinity Grade 5 theory counts.

ABRSM runs face-to-face Practical Grades in four sessions a year in Singapore. The 2026 sessions ran in March to April, June to July, September, and 23 November to 11 December, with booking for the last one closed on 24 September; 2027 dates are not yet on its page. Its Performance Grades are assessed from a video you record and upload within 28 days of booking, at any time of year.

Trinity College London examines in Singapore through its representative, TCM Examinations, with practical exams from end May to mid June and end November to mid December. Its Rock & Pop grades cover guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals, and can be taken digitally by video. Trinity's Singapore fees are not refundable or transferable.

Other boards appear on the cards. Cristofori teaches to RSL (Rockschool) grades and its own theory exam, Rocktone is Rockschool's partner for drums, guitar, piano, ukulele and voice, and MADDspace's singers can take London College of Music exams.

Exam, 2026ABRSMTrinity
Initial practical$274$239
Grade 1 practical$304$279
Grade 3 practical$394$374
Grade 5 practical$441$435
Grade 8 practical$759$678
Grade 5 theory$205$199

ABRSM's video Performance Grades cost less: $211 at Grade 1 and $529 at Grade 8. Fees are from ABRSM's Singapore page and Trinity's Singapore representative, read on 4 November 2026.

What music lessons cost in 2026

Of the 37 schools here, 17 publish at least one fee. The rest ask you to contact them. Where fees are published, the pattern is clear:

  • Group classes: $40 to $61 a class. Juzmusic and The Music Circle are $40, LVL and Yamaha's Piano Course for Children $45, Joy Music Studio $48, Yamaha's Primary Course $49 and Cristofori's I CAN PLAY about $61.
  • One-to-one, 30 minutes: $43 to $70. Drum Tutor is $43 on weekdays, Nousound $56, LVL and Rocktone $65, Aureus $70.
  • One-to-one, 45 minutes: Play By Ear is $72, Rocktone $80, LVL $85 and Aureus about $100.
  • Fees rise with grade at most schools: Rocktone's 30-minute lesson goes from $65 at beginner to $95 at Grades 7 to 8, and Cristofori's piano term fee from $620 to $710 by Grade 5.

Watch for what sits on top. Yamaha charges $60 to register, Mandeville $80 plus a month's deposit, and Drum Tutor $50 plus a month's deposit. GST is included at Yamaha, added at Cristofori and not mentioned at most others. For piano alone, our guide to what piano lessons cost goes further.

How we picked these

Every school here is listed on Jungle. We checked 58 music businesses Jungle lists on their own websites, fee pages and booking systems, and kept the 37 that run regular instrument or singing lessons for children at a studio and are still trading. Schools that teach only babies and toddlers are in our toddler guide.

The quick picks are our judgement on stated criteria: a free trial with one published fee for five instruments, the lowest published hourly price for group piano for school-age children, and published fees all the way to Grade 8. Fees, ages and exam fees were read on 4 November 2026.
