Piano Lessons for Kids in Hougang: The 7 Best Schools on Jungle, Ranked (2026)

Four of the seven piano schools in this list sit within 350 metres of Hougang MRT, and one of them is inside the station, above Exit A. That makes Hougang one of the easier estates in Singapore to fit a weekly lesson into. Pick up from school, walk to Hougang Central, and a 45-minute lesson is over before dinner.

What is harder is choosing. Seven schools teach piano lessons in Hougang and list on Jungle, and they differ more than the signage suggests. One teaches three-year-olds in groups of up to six. One teaches every child one-to-one from the very first lesson. One prepares children for Rockschool exams, not ABRSM. And one of the two Yamaha schools in Hougang is not run by Yamaha. Only three of the seven publish a full fee table.

1. Cristofori Music School, Hougang Central

Cristofori has taught music in Singapore for 45 years, and its Hougang school is on the third floor of Blk 809 Hougang Central, 180 metres from the MRT. Piano is taught at every Cristofori branch. Children aged five and under start in I-Can-Play, a group of two or three at one piano: 45 minutes for a pair, 60 for a trio. From five, lessons are one-to-one on a graded track. Every studio has a new European Sound piano.

The exam track is the one to know about. Cristofori's three-year programme ends with the RSL (Rockschool) Grade 2 piano practical and Cristofori's own Grade 2 theory exam, and its piano lessons page does not mention ABRSM. If your child's exams need to be ABRSM, ask before you enrol.

Why kids will love it: Under-fives share the keyboard with one or two others, so the first lessons feel like taking turns in a game, not sitting a test. Year one is posture, hand shape and simple pieces. Year two adds duets. By year three, children make small arrangements of their own and play in concerts. It suits a child who likes knowing exactly what the next step is.

2. Melodious Piano Studio, Lorong Ah Soo

Melodious is a piano studio and nothing else: no drums, no guitar, no violin. The Hougang studio is a glass-fronted unit on the ground floor of Blk 142 Lorong Ah Soo, with a grand piano in the window, and it is one of several Melodious studios across Singapore. Lessons are mainly one-to-one, with some small-group classes, children can start from four, and graded students are prepared for ABRSM exams. Teachers send parents a progress update after every lesson.

Why kids will love it: In a one-to-one lesson every minute is theirs, because nobody else is at the piano. The studio also runs mini performances between the termly recitals, small low-stakes concerts for children new to playing in front of people, and 17 of its Google reviews mention them by name. It suits a child who needs confidence more than competition.

3. Aureus Academy, Hougang 1

Aureus runs more than 30 studios in Singapore, and this one is at #01-44 of Hougang 1, the neighbourhood mall on Hougang Street 91. Every piano lesson is one-to-one. The in-house curriculum, Aureus Interactive, uses illustrated storybooks and runs from Grade 1 to Grade 5, and children who want a recognised qualification can prepare for ABRSM or Trinity exams alongside it. Most children start at four or five. Lessons can be moved with four hours' notice in the Aureus app, which helps when school timetables change mid-term.

The catch is transport. Hougang 1 is 1.5km from the nearest MRT station, so plan on a bus.

Why kids will love it: The lesson books read like storybooks, and progress arrives as skill points, badges and plushies, so a five-year-old can see how far they have come. The repertoire runs from classical to jazz, pop and Latin. Recitals take place in Aureus's own recital halls.

4. Joy Waltz Academy, The Midtown

Joy Waltz began teaching piano inside schools in 2012 and now runs five studios, one of them on the second floor of The Midtown, beside Hougang MRT. Its Pianist Prodigy programme teaches piano in small groups. Little Pianist Prodigy is for ages 3 to 7, split into 3 to 5 and 5 to 7. I'm a Pianist Prodigy is for 7 and up. Both run for one hour a week with three to six children, and both follow the foundations of the ABRSM syllabus. After that, children move to one-to-one ABRSM Grade 1 to 8 lessons of 45 minutes a week.

The minimum age is firm: three years old from the date of birth. Joy Waltz will not take a two-and-a-half-year-old, even for a trial.

Why kids will love it: Notes come with colours, illustrated storylines and songs, and a three-year-old sits at a keyboard alongside a few other children the same age. The trial is parent-accompanied, so you both see the class first. Regular lessons are drop-off. It suits a sociable child who would rather learn with friends than alone.

5. Yamaha Music School, Hougang

Yamaha's own Hougang school is on the third floor of 202 Hougang Street 21, one floor above Yamaha's Singapore head office and a short walk from Kovan MRT. Yamaha runs three piano routes for children. The Yamaha Primary Course is a group class for ages 4 to 5.5, with a parent in the room. The Piano Course for Children is a group of five to ten children aged 6 to 8, with 11 one-hour lessons a term, aimed at a Yamaha grade or ABRSM Grade 1 to 3. The Yamaha Piano Course is one-to-one from age 5.5, runs through 12 levels, and prepares children for both Yamaha Grade and ABRSM exams.

Yamaha publishes one fee table for all its company-run schools and lists which courses run where only in a downloadable file, so ask the Hougang school which of the three it has places in.

The second Yamaha school in Hougang works differently. The unit at Hougang Green Shopping Mall, 21 Hougang Street 51, #02-04/05, is a Yamaha-licensed school run by an independent company, Music Act, which has been a Yamaha-licensed school since 1999. Music Act teaches piano one-to-one towards ABRSM grades and runs the Yamaha Primary Course for ages 3 to 5 from $498 a term. It opens Monday and Wednesday to Friday 3pm to 9pm, Saturday 9am to 6pm and Sunday 9am to 2pm, and closes on Tuesdays, public holidays and term breaks. It is on Jungle as Yamaha Music School, Hougang Green.

Why kids will love it: Yamaha teaches ears before eyes. Younger children sing and play by ear before they read notes, and many learn to pick out a tune on the keyboard without the score in front of them. Group students perform in concerts Yamaha organises. It suits a child who is always singing.

6. Music for Young Children, Hougang

Music for Young Children (MYC) is a group method that began in Canada in 1980, and its Hougang studio is in Block 806 Hougang Central, #04-148. That unit is on the fourth floor of a residential block, 220 metres from the MRT, not a shopfront, and Jungle's listing leaves the unit number out, so use the one here. Classes are groups with a parent taking part, and every level mixes singing, listening, movement, rhythm and composition, with keyboard from age three.

The levels follow age. Sunrise, for ages 2 to 3, is pre-keyboard music and movement in three ten-week blocks. Sunshine, for 3 to 4, is the first keyboard level. Sunbeams starts at 5 to 6 and Moonbeams at 7 to 9. The last level, Moonbeams 3, prepares children for their first piano exam and first theory exam. MYC does not name the exam board on its website.

MYC ranks sixth because it has only two Google reviews, too few to count for much until more parents review it.

Why kids will love it: Puppets, teddy bears and a set of keyboard critters teach where the notes live, and children clap rhythms, sing, move and then write down what they heard. A parent takes part in the class alongside them. It is one of two schools here that takes children under three.

7. Learn 2 Play Music Academy, Hougang MRT

Learn 2 Play has taught music for more than 12 years, and its studio is a kiosk unit, #01-K1, at Hougang MRT station, just above Exit A. Piano is one-to-one from age five, in 30, 45 or 60-minute lessons, with ABRSM exams for students who want them and ABRSM theory from Grade 1 to Grade 8. The academy says its students have passed 124 exams. Younger children start in Early Music Learners, a group class for 18 months to 4 years, then a nine-month Pre-schoolers' Piano course that prepares them for individual lessons.

Two things to know. It is open only four days a week, and it closes during school term breaks. It also has the lowest rating in this group: 4.2 from 23 reviews, although 20 of those 23 are four or five stars.

Why kids will love it: The lesson is in the station, so there is no bus and no walk in the rain. The youngest children get songs, games, movement and real instruments in a group, and then a preschool piano course before they sit at a piano alone at five.

What piano lessons cost in Hougang

Three of the seven schools publish a full fee table: Cristofori, Aureus and Yamaha. Music Act publishes one price for its Yamaha group course, and Joy Waltz publishes only its trial price and a $100 deposit for group classes. Melodious, MYC and Learn 2 Play do not publish fees, so ask for a quote at the trial.

Two notes on reading the table. Aureus's 45-minute package works out at $99.75 a lesson, and it includes books and materials. Yamaha adds a $60 registration fee, and Cristofori's table does not state how many lessons make up a term, so the monthly and termly figures are not directly comparable until you ask.

How to choose

The exam board. Five of the seven name ABRSM: Melodious, Aureus, Joy Waltz, Yamaha and Learn 2 Play, and Aureus also offers Trinity. Cristofori's programme leads to Rockschool (RSL) piano grades. MYC prepares children for a first piano exam without naming the board. If you want ABRSM grades specifically, settle this at the trial.

Group or one-to-one. Groups suit young children who learn by copying their friends: Joy Waltz (three to six children), Yamaha's Piano Course for Children (five to ten), Cristofori's I-Can-Play (two or three), MYC, and Learn 2 Play's preschool classes. One-to-one moves at your child's pace: Aureus from the first lesson, Melodious for most students, and Cristofori, Yamaha and Learn 2 Play once a child reaches five or so.

The starting age. Learn 2 Play takes 18-month-olds and MYC takes two-year-olds, in music-and-movement groups. Joy Waltz starts piano at three. Yamaha's group course starts at four, Melodious at four, and most Aureus students at four or five. One-to-one lessons at Cristofori and Learn 2 Play begin at five.

The journey, twice a week. Cristofori, MYC, Joy Waltz and Learn 2 Play are all within 350 metres of Hougang MRT. Yamaha and Melodious are nearer Kovan. Aureus at Hougang 1 needs a bus. Learn 2 Play opens only on Wednesday, Friday and weekends, which rules it out for some families before anything else.

A keyboard at home. None of these schools requires a piano to start. Aureus recommends at least an 88-key weighted keyboard for practice, Joy Waltz says a basic keyboard is enough at the beginning, and Yamaha suggests having an instrument by the end of the first Primary Course book. Budget for one within the first term.
