The 6 Best Art Classes for Kids in Hougang and Kovan (2026)

The highest-rated art place in Hougang is not a class. Studio Asobi is a home pottery studio on Hougang Avenue 2, open by appointment, and its own website says the workshops are "catered primarily for adults". Children are welcome from 7, as long as an adult books and pays alongside them. It still tops this ranking on a 5.0 from 70 Google reviews, and it is the most interesting art thing in the estate, but it is not somewhere to drop a six-year-old on a Saturday morning.

That gap between what Jungle lists and what a parent can actually book runs through this whole area. Nine providers are listed under art across Hougang, Kovan and Serangoon. Three of the nine are gone or unbookable: Artzillions has moved to Ubi Road, ARTARY's Kovan campus has disappeared from every campus list on ARTARY's own website, and Let Colour Soar still runs a Kovan branch but publishes no unit number anywhere, so we could not send you to a door.

What is left is a tight cluster. Tree Art is 349 metres from Kovan MRT and Colormoon is 522 metres from the same station, on opposite sides of Upper Serangoon Road. Between them they hold 321 of the Google reviews on this list.

1. Studio Asobi

Studio Asobi is a home pottery studio near the top of Hougang Avenue 2, run by appointment rather than daily opening hours. It is the only clay studio on this list, and the only one where a parent has to take part.

The class to book with a child is the Living Clay Pottery Workshop, a single three-hour session for $95 a person. The studio is straight about who it is for: workshops are "catered primarily for adults, but children (ages 7 and up) are welcome to learn as long as they are accompanied by another adult participant", and "the full workshop fee would apply for every participant". So a parent and one child is $190. Scheduled sessions take seven people.

Do not book the Play-Time open sessions for a beginner. Those are unguided studio time at $18 an hour, described by the studio as being "for people experienced in pottery making and who do not require teaching".

Why kids will love it: Three hours of hand-building and coiling a pot of their own, plus a short go on the electric wheel. Nothing comes home on the day. The studio glazes and fires the piece and you collect it two to three weeks later, food-safe, which is its own second visit to look forward to.

2. De Mini Art Studio

De Mini Art Studio is in SPACE @ Kovan on Yio Chu Kang Road, and it runs the clearest age ladder of any studio here. Weekly classes are named after painters and split into five bands: Mini Monet for 2.5 to 4, Mini Picasso for 5 to 6, Mini Van Gogh for 7 to 9, Mini Matisse for 10 to 12 and Da Vinci for 13 to 17. Adults have their own course, which is unusual in a children's studio and means a parent can book a class in the same room.

Mini Monet runs an hour. Every other band runs 90 minutes. The youngest work on craft, painting and drawing around a theme; from 5 the classes add 3D work and artist studies; from 7 the emphasis shifts to observation and technique; and by 10 to 12 it is sketching and painting proper, building towards the teenage Da Vinci class in watercolour, acrylic and sketching.

Why kids will love it: Their class is named after a painter and they work their way up the ladder, Monet to Picasso to Van Gogh, which is a far better motivator for a seven-year-old than being moved from Level 2 to Level 3. Classes are weekly and themed, so there is something new each time.

3. Colormoon

Colormoon calls this its Main School, on the second floor above the Lim Ah Pin Road post office, a few minutes from Kovan MRT. It has 192 Google reviews, more than any other studio on this list, and it now runs three branches, having added Marine Parade Central to this one and Clarke Quay.

Classes are capped at six children. The studio teaches art history alongside making, which most studios here do not, and it puts work into exhibitions and competitions. Its four course lines are Creative Art for all ages, Professional Art from 8, Anime Illustration from 8 and outdoor Plein Air workshops. The studio itself has a planted balcony, a picture book corner and fairy tale murals painted by the teachers.

Why kids will love it: Anime. A child who fills the margins of their homework with manga faces gets a course built on exactly that, taught alongside Western and Asian graphic novel styles, rather than being told to draw a fruit bowl.

4. Tree Art, Stars of Kovan

Tree Art's Kovan campus is on the ground floor of Stars of Kovan, 349 metres from the station, which makes it the easiest studio here to reach without a car. The brand now runs 16 campuses in Singapore and teaches the same REMAT curriculum at each.

Creative Art covers 3 to 8 in four stages, Professional Art starts at 8 and splits into Fine Arts, Design and Exploration, and Portfolio Preparation runs to 18. Classes are capped at one teacher to six children, and every material is supplied, including for outdoor sketching sessions. The syllabus is specific about what a child meets and when: colour mixing and monoprinting at 3 to 4, Chinese painting and complementary colours at 4 to 5, sketching and colour theory at 5 to 6, then memory drawing, three-dimensional form and art history at 6 to 8, with Kandinsky, Klee, Picasso and Monet along the way.

Why kids will love it: Tools are sized for the child rather than the adult, with large brushes and chunky crayons for the youngest, and the media run well past paper: printmaking, sculpture and ceramics all appear in the Creative Art years.

5. Global Art, Buangkok Square

Global Art is the franchise on this list, and Buangkok Square is the branch its own centre directory names for this corner of Hougang. It is the most structured programme here, built on a workbook and a homework book at every level, so a child draws between classes as well as in them.

The ladder runs Junior at 3 to 4 on gel pastel and craft, Foundation at 5 to 6 on oil pastel, Pre-Basic at 6 to 7 on lines, ratio and shapes, Basic at 7 to 9 on oil pastel or poster colour, Intermediate at 10 to 12 on human faces and figures, and Advance from 13 on graded pencils and watercolour. Side programmes add Cartoon and Comic from 7, G-Clay modelling from 4 and acrylic painting on canvas from 7.

Why kids will love it: Cartoon and Comic is the draw. Children build their own characters and draw comic strips with expression and background composition, which is the thing plenty of seven-year-olds are already doing in the back of an exercise book.

6. My Art Pencil

Be straight about the address first: My Art Pencil is in First Centre on Serangoon North Avenue 4, about 1.9km from Hougang MRT, and the studio markets itself to Buangkok, Sengkang, Hougang, Serangoon and Ang Mo Kio alike. It moved here from Hougang Green Mall in November 2023 after ten years there.

It is also the only studio on this list that publishes its fees in full, in a schedule dated July 2026. Four lessons cost $136 for ages 3 to 5, $128 at 6, $132 at 7, $140 at 8, $148 for 9 to 12 and $156 for 13 to 15, with trial classes from $37 to $44. The 3 to 5 class runs one teacher to a maximum of two children, the smallest published ratio in this post. Everything else is one to four. All materials are provided and every class is drop-off, though a parent may sit in on a first class for a three or four-year-old.

Why kids will love it: A new subject every week, finished in the session, so something comes home every single class. The youngest are handed unconventional tools, including their own bare hands, and older children work through pointillism, monochromatic painting and pencil hatching on paper, canvas, cardboard, wood and fabric.

What art classes cost in Hougang

Three of the six publish a price, and only one publishes a full fee table. These are the figures that are published, read on 23 September 2026.

My Art Pencil is the only studio here you can budget for before you walk in. At $148 for four 90-minute lessons, a 10-year-old's class works out at about $24.70 an hour with materials. Studio Asobi looks dearer at $95, until you count that it is three hours and that the adult is taking the class too. For the other three, ask for the term fee, the registration fee and the material fee separately.

How to choose

1. Check whether you are staying. Studio Asobi requires an adult to book and pay alongside a child, so the real price of a first pottery session is $190. Tree Art, My Art Pencil and Colormoon are drop-off, and My Art Pencil lets a parent sit in on a first class for a three or four-year-old.

2. Ask about class size. My Art Pencil publishes one teacher to two children for ages 3 to 5, and one to four above that. Tree Art and Colormoon both cap classes at six. Global Art and De Mini publish no ratio, so ask before the trial.

3. Decide what should come home. My Art Pencil finishes a piece every week. Tree Art and Global Art build skills across a term. Studio Asobi's pots take two to three weeks to fire and are collected later.

4. Match the age. De Mini starts youngest at 2.5, Tree Art and Global Art at 3, My Art Pencil at 3 with a ceiling of 15, and Studio Asobi takes no child under 7.

5. Work out the journey. Tree Art at 349 metres and Colormoon at 520 metres are both walkable from Kovan. Global Art at Buangkok Square and My Art Pencil in Serangoon North are a bus or a drive, and Studio Asobi is a home studio you visit by appointment.
