Taekwondo in Bukit Timah for Kids: 6 Schools Ranked, from Beauty World to Holland Village (2026)

The most-reviewed taekwondo school in Bukit Timah is two floors underground. ILDO Taekwondo Academy teaches from unit #B2-05 of Bukit Timah Shopping Centre, and it has 433 Google reviews. The other five schools in this guide have 372 between them.

This is a guide to taekwondo in Bukit Timah for parents of children aged 3 and up. It covers the six taekwondo schools Jungle lists in Bukit Timah, Beauty World, Holland and Tanglin. That is every taekwondo school on Jungle in the area, not a survey of every dojang, and each one has a booking link. Two sit within 260 metres of Beauty World MRT. One is a two-minute walk from Holland Village station. One is at Balmoral Plaza near Newton, one is on Tanglin Road, and one is in a condominium basement where most families will drive.

Every entry gives the class times for children, the youngest age taken, the trial offer, the Google rating and the grading system, because that last one is how you tell six similar-looking schools apart.

ILDO's Bukit Timah branch is the headquarters of its four dojangs. Classes are cut finely by age: Little Tiny and Tiny for 3 to 6, Kids for 7 to 11, Teens for 12 to 17, then family and over-50 classes. A class takes up to 20 students. Weekday daytimes go to the CCA classes ILDO's instructors teach at international schools and preschools, including the German European School, the Swiss School and Dover Court, so on weekdays the children's group classes start at 4pm.

ILDO's website does not name a governing body. Its black belt ceremonies award Poom and Dan grades, which are the Kukkiwon ranks, and it runs separate poomsae, sparring and demonstration competition classes. The school is closed on Mondays, public holidays and grading days, with no make-up for lessons that fall on them.

Why kids will love it: The sparring class opens at yellow belt, so once a child earns that first colour, kicking pads turns into sparring with a partner. The youngest start in Little Tiny, built on games and basic movements. On Sundays at noon the family class lets a parent train on the same mat. ILDO's newest branch, at HillV2 on Hillview Rise, runs the same programme but is not yet on Jungle.

2. Johan Taekwondo Institute, Holland

Johan's Holland branch is in the basement of the Pandan Valley condominium, one of 11 Johan dojangs in Singapore. The head instructor, Master Kim Cheongsol, holds a Kukkiwon 6th Dan and a Singapore Taekwondo Federation 5th Dan, is an STF grading assessor and is a former Singapore national sparring champion. He has taught in Singapore since 2013.

The syllabus is the Kukkiwon one: Taegeuk forms, kicks, punches and sweeps, take-downs, self-defence and Olympic-style sparring. Johan's dojangs close on STF grading days, which tells you where the belts are tested. The principal, Master Yoon Daeung, holds a Kukkiwon 7th Dan and a World Taekwondo international coaching licence, and the school runs its own competition team.

Why kids will love it: The toddler class, from age 3, mixes games and drills with running, jumping and forward rolls, and the first Taegeuk moves. From 5, the kids' class adds self-defence and Olympic-style sparring. Children who get hooked can try for the competition team. The trial class is free, which is the cheap way to find out whether your child takes to it.

3. Taeseong Taekwondo, Holland Village

Taeseong is the Singapore franchise of a poomsae school in Suwon, South Korea, co-owned by the twins Ji Ho-Yong and Ji Ho-Chul, both former Korean national team members. That shapes the syllabus. Classes centre on poomsae, the set patterns that decide belt gradings and win their own medals, and sparring plays the supporting role. The school is affiliated to the Singapore Taekwondo Federation.

The Holland Village studio is above the Dr Boey clinic on Lorong Mambong, one of six Taeseong locations. Fees are charged by three-month term, the same for every age group. Gradings are held at the end of each term, and a child needs at least 10 lessons that term to sit one. Taeseong also runs a Bukit Timah studio at 10 Jalan Serene, which is not yet on Jungle.

Why kids will love it: Tiny Tots, for 3 and 4 year olds, is taught in English and Korean, so a preschooler hears a second language from the first lesson. It runs 45 minutes. From 5, classes are an hour, and high-belt children get their own 6pm class on weekdays. Black belts move on to board breaking, nunchaku and a taekwondo routine set to K-pop, which gives a ten-year-old something to aim at.

4. Gaonhae Taekwondo, Balmoral Plaza

Gaonhae's headquarters is on the second floor of Balmoral Plaza, at the Newton end of Bukit Timah Road. The school was founded in 2017. Headmaster Kang holds a 7th Dan from both Kukkiwon and the Singapore Taekwondo Federation, has a master's degree in taekwondo teaching from Kyung Hee University, and coaches and referees poomsae and sparring for the STF. Gaonhae states plainly that its training follows Kukkiwon and STF standards, which makes it the easiest of the six to place.

The Balmoral timetable, updated for 2026, runs 38 sessions a week, from Little Gaonhae for 4 to 6 year olds up to teens and adults, plus competition squads for sparring and poomsae picked by selection. Class sizes are kept small, though the school does not give a number.

Why kids will love it: Little Gaonhae, for 4 to 6 year olds, is 45 minutes of games and basic movements, so the first class feels like play. Older children do poomsae, sparring, stretching and physical training, and every lesson is varied. The floor is shock-absorbing impact matting, which matters the first time a child lands badly from a kick. The trial class is free.

5. HanKuk Taekwondo, Tanglin Road

HanKuk teaches from the office tower of the Orchard Rendezvous Hotel, where Tanglin Road meets Orchard Road. It is a member of Kukkiwon, World Taekwondo and the Singapore Taekwondo Federation. The principal, Master Lee Seung Man, holds an 8th Dan recognised by both Kukkiwon and the STF, examines Poom and Dan gradings for Kukkiwon, and was head coach of Team Singapore at the 2010 ASEAN University Games. Gradings are held every quarter.

One caution. The timetable on HanKuk's website is dated July 2024. Its Google business listing is active and its opening time matches the timetable, but confirm the class times when you book the trial.

Why kids will love it: Kinder classes teach the first kicks and punches through games, and on weekends Kinder is the first class of the day at 10am. Sparring starts at green belt, and there is a kids' sparring class every day the school is open, so a child who has earned it gets plenty of practice. The trial class is free.

6. KyungHee Taekwondo, Beauty World

KyungHee opened its first branch here, in Beauty World Centre, in 2011, and has since added Jurong East, Orchard and Woodlands. It is an authorised dojang of the Kyung Hee University Taekwondo Union in South Korea. The grandmaster, Eom Seong Soo, holds a Kukkiwon 8th Dan, is a first-class Kukkiwon examiner and holds an STF poomsae coaching certificate. He was head taekwondo instructor at UWCSEA from 2013 to 2019.

Children are grouped by school stage rather than belt alone: Tots for 3 to 6, Level 1 for 7 to 10, Level 2 for 11 and 12, Level 3 for teens. The school runs internal and external gradings. The last round finished in July 2026, and there are no lessons on grading day.

Why kids will love it: The Tots class runs at 3pm every weekday it is open, which suits a child coming straight from preschool. Older children get an all-levels sparring class every day the school is open, so there is always a match to practise for. On Sundays at 5pm and 6pm, families can train together. The free trial covers toddlers and primary school pupils only; teens and adults pay for theirs.

What taekwondo costs in Bukit Timah

None of the six publishes a term fee on its website. This is everything they do publish, as of 21 September 2026.

When you call, ask four things: the term fee, how many lessons a week it covers, what a grading costs, and whether the uniform is included. Then check the missed-lesson rules. Taeseong lets a student reschedule up to two lessons a term with 12 hours' notice. ILDO does not make up lessons that fall on a public holiday or grading day, so count those dates when you compare.

How to choose

The grading path. All six teach the World Taekwondo style: poomsae patterns and Olympic-style sparring, not the patterns of the ITF, the other international federation. Kukkiwon in Seoul issues the black belt certificates, called Poom for children under 15 and Dan from 15. The Singapore Taekwondo Federation is the national body. Gaonhae, HanKuk and Taeseong name their STF link on their websites. Johan's head instructor in Holland is an STF grading assessor. KyungHee's grandmaster is a Kukkiwon examiner. ILDO awards Poom and Dan grades without naming the body. If your child may switch schools later, ask whether the black belt comes with a Kukkiwon certificate.

Patterns or sparring. Taeseong is poomsae-first by design and suits a child who likes precision. Johan and Gaonhae run competition squads in sparring. ILDO, HanKuk and KyungHee run dedicated sparring classes, which suit a child who needs to burn energy.

The youngest age. ILDO, Johan, Taeseong and KyungHee take 3 year olds. HanKuk starts at 3.5 and Gaonhae at 4. Johan will consider a child under 3 case by case.

The weekday start time. Taeseong, Gaonhae, HanKuk and KyungHee all run children's classes from 3pm or 3.30pm on weekdays, which suits preschoolers. ILDO's classes start at 4pm, because its instructors spend weekday daytimes teaching school CCAs. Johan opens at 2.30pm. All six are open on Saturdays and Sundays.

The journey. ILDO and KyungHee are at Beauty World MRT and Taeseong is at Holland Village MRT, so an older child can come by train. Gaonhae is five minutes from Newton and HanKuk about 600m from Orchard. Johan's dojang at Pandan Valley is about 1km from the nearest station, so plan on driving.
