Bishan's art studios are not in Bishan's HDB estate. Of the seven below, one sits in a housing block on Bishan Street 22. Two are on upper floors of industrial buildings on Jalan Pemimpin, within 250m of Marymount MRT. Three are in shops on Upper Thomson Road, within 300m of Upper Thomson station, and one is in Sin Ming Plaza. They share postal sector 57, which is why a search for art classes in Bishan returns them, but a parent who lives by Bishan MRT will find six of the seven nearer to another station.

So we describe each location as it is. Where a studio is really in Upper Thomson or Sin Ming, the entry says so.

A pet-friendly studio on the fourth floor of Tailee Industrial Building on Jalan Pemimpin, 235m from Marymount MRT. It is the most reviewed studio on this list, 395 reviews at 5.0, and it is an art jam studio with teachers rather than a school with a syllabus. There is no minimum age. The Guided Art Jam is $50 for about two hours of acrylic on canvas with a guide at the table and no clock running. Workshops cover bear figurine painting at $55, shrink-plastic keychains at $50, a three-hour Ukulele Paint and Play at $115 and a Custom Camera session at $238, where the child paints an eco-friendly digital camera and takes it home. For weekly teaching it offers 1-to-1 guided classes for all ages, priced on request.

The catch: there is no published term course, level structure or class timetable. It suits a Saturday afternoon or a child who wants to paint beside a parent more than a child who needs a year of progression. Pets are welcome in the studio, which matters if your child has an allergy.

Why kids will love it: They choose what to paint and nobody tells them to stop. A child can learn a simple tune on a plain ukulele, then paint it into a rainbow and carry it home. Parents may sit beside younger children who are not painting. Bring a picture of what your child wants to make, because the studio asks for one.

2. Artlette Art Studio, Thomson Plaza

Artlette runs three studios, and this one is unit #03-18 of Thomson Plaza on Upper Thomson Road. That is Upper Thomson rather than Bishan, 222m from Upper Thomson MRT. It is the most structured studio on the list, and it publishes both a full price list and a class timetable, which most studios here do not. The kids programme has three bands: Explorer I for 3.5 to 4 year olds in one-hour classes, then Explorer II for 5 to 6 and Adventurer for 7 to 9, both 90 minutes. The curriculum covers the colour wheel, sketching, tonal values, perspective and composition, with one teacher to every five or six children and one finished artwork per lesson. From 9 there are hobbyist classes in acrylic, watercolour, sketching and Procreate. From 10 there is a 20-session portfolio course for school admission.

Classes are drop-off only, and children between 3.5 and 5 are encouraged to do a trial first. Artlette's second nearby studio is at Jubilee Square in Ang Mo Kio, if that side of town suits you better.

Why kids will love it: A new theme every week and a finished piece to carry out of the door every time, in oil pastel, acrylic or watercolour. New students get a Faber-Castell art bag to keep. The weekend 9.15am class leaves the rest of Saturday free, and a parent can book a hobbyist class in the same slot rather than wait outside.

3. White Canvas Studio

A shophouse studio at 229A Upper Thomson Road, 238m from Upper Thomson MRT, and one of the places in our Upper Thomson, Springleaf and Mandai guide. It runs structured children's classes as well as art jams. There are six levels. Discoverer starts at 2.5 years with oil pastel, poster paint and watercolour. Explorer from 6.5 moves to observational drawing, and Conqueror from 9.5 studies the masters and builds a personal style. Alongside them sit Sketcher from 7 for pencil and shading, a Chibi Art class from 7 and a Mastery portfolio course from 9. A trial class for ages 3 to 12 includes all materials, and a 1-for-1 trial offer was running in September 2026.

Two cautions. The studio does not publish its term fees. And its hours are unusual: Tuesday opening runs only from October to February, Monday opening is on selected Mondays only, and weekends close at 5pm. Check before a Monday or Tuesday visit, because one page of its own site says it is closed on both.

Why kids will love it: The Chibi Art class teaches the big-head, big-eye cartoon style, and it ends with each child drawing a comic strip of their own. Younger children in Discoverer work in oil pastel, poster paint and watercolour. The guided acrylic art jam, $40 for two hours, is a cheap way to test the studio first.

4. Artsy Bugsy Studio

Unit #02-08 of Halcyon 2, a light-industrial building at 47 Jalan Pemimpin, 250m from Marymount MRT. It is one of four Artsy Bugsy studios, and the one the owners call their Bishan studio. Children move up through five age bands: Baby Beetles for 3 to 4 year olds, Mini Mantis for 5 to 6, Little Ladybugs for 7 to 9, Jr Jumping Beans for 10 to 12 and Budding Butterflies for 13 to 16. A separate portfolio course prepares children for Direct School Admission and the School of the Arts. Classes for 3 to 6 year olds run 90 minutes, and from 7 they run two hours. Lessons mix drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and craft. The studio manager is a NAFA fine arts graduate, and Artsy Bugsy students took all four Singapore places in the International Fish Art Contest.

Classes are drop-off. A parent may walk a nervous child in on the first day and is then asked to leave.

Why kids will love it: The projects are big and tactile. The photo above shows one of its projects: a painted tree house on a starry sky, with pompom leaves and fairy lights that switch on. Baby Beetles classes are built around sensory play and craft-making, so a three-year-old is not asked to sit still and draw for 90 minutes. The trial is free for every age group, so there is nothing to lose by trying one.

5. Global Art Bishan

The only studio on this list inside the Bishan housing estate, on the second floor of Blk 283 Bishan Street 22. It is one of 18 Global Art centres on the chain's own centre finder, and it teaches the chain's graded course with its own workbooks. Junior is for 3 to 4 year olds, Foundation for 5 to 6, Pre-Basic for 6 to 7, Basic for 7 to 9, Intermediate for 10 to 12 and Advance for 13 and up. Children aged 4 and up can add G-Clay modelling and handicraft, and from 7 there are cartoon and comic classes and acrylic painting. Every class runs 90 minutes.

Three things to know. Its fees are not published. Its rank rests mostly on the area average, because it has only two Google reviews. And the timetable its Bishan page links to is a file named 2024, so confirm the slot by phone before you plan around it. It is also the one studio here more than a kilometre from an MRT station.

Why kids will love it: Each level comes with its own workbook, homework book and sketchbook, so a child can see last month's drawing next to this month's and notice the difference. The Basic level turns fruit, animals and people into story pictures. From 4, children can add G-Clay, a soft coloured clay for modelling their favourite characters.

6. Sage Artelier

Unit #01-16 of Sin Ming Plaza Tower 2, 6 Sin Ming Road. That is Sin Ming, on the Bishan side of Upper Thomson, 427m from Upper Thomson MRT. A second studio has since opened in Siglap. Sage publishes the clearest fee list of any studio here. Little Creators is for 3 to 4 year olds. Fundamental, from age 5, teaches colour theory, shape, line and texture through a new theme each month and the work of artists from Paul Klee and Henri Matisse to Keith Haring, Piet Mondrian and Eric Carle. Evolution, from 6, moves on to perspective, realism and Procreate through Van Gogh, Dali and Frida Kahlo. Portfolio Building for 10 to 12 year olds runs two hours and ends in a studio exhibition. Every other class is 90 minutes, and each module ends with a written assessment for parents.

The gap: there is no fixed weekly timetable online. The studio updates its schedule each week and takes bookings by WhatsApp.

Why kids will love it: The artists on the Fundamental list include Keith Haring, with his dancing outlines, and Mondrian, with his red, yellow and blue squares, so a child finishes a module knowing the names behind the pictures. The $50 registration fee comes back as a tote bag, a T-shirt, an apron and a sketchbook. For a one-off, a single Art Play session is $45.

A shophouse studio at 228 Upper Thomson Road, behind the UOB branch, 298m from Upper Thomson MRT. It is one of six Art Grain branches and has the widest range of courses on this list. Seedling Art takes children from 2.5 to 4, and Headstart takes 5 and 6 year olds. Foundation Art, for 7 to 10 and mostly acrylic, is its most popular course. Development Art follows for 10 to 12. There are also classes in drawing, clay, and digital art on iPads the studio provides, plus a two-and-a-half-year portfolio course for Direct School Admission. Classes are mixed-level, but each child follows their own plan, and lessons are drop-off.

Two drawbacks. It has the lowest Google rating of the seven, 4.3 from 32 reviews, which is why it ranks last. And the fees stack up: a 10-lesson Foundation module is $410, and a new student also pays $25 registration, a $50 annual materials fee, $13 for a journal and a $123 deposit.

Why kids will love it: A nine-year-old can draw on an iPad in Procreate one term and model in clay the next. Foundation Art children paint a finished acrylic piece from a still life, a landscape or an animal. The studio is shut on Tuesdays, so plan a weekday trial for a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday afternoon.

What art classes cost in Bishan

Three of the seven studios publish their term fees. The others publish a trial offer, an art jam price or nothing at all, and the table says which.

Where fees are published, a term lesson costs $35 to $60, and the first term carries $50 to $88 of registration and material fees on top. The cheapest way in is Artsy Bugsy's free trial, then White Canvas's $38 trial class. After the trials, the cheapest one-off session is White Canvas's $40 guided art jam, followed by Sage's $45 Art Play.

How to choose

1. Decide between a course and an art jam. Avant-Garde sells sessions you book one at a time. The other six run graded courses where a child moves up through levels.

2. Check the youngest age. White Canvas and Art Grain take children from 2.5. Artsy Bugsy, Sage and Global Art start at 3. Artlette starts at 3.5 and encourages children under 5 to do a trial first.

3. Ask whether you can stay. Artlette, Artsy Bugsy and Art Grain run drop-off classes and say so. Avant-Garde lets a parent sit beside a younger child.

4. If the goal is Direct School Admission, compare the portfolio courses. Art Grain's runs two and a half years for 10 to 12 year olds. Artlette's is 20 sessions from age 10. Sage's is for 10 to 12, and Artsy Bugsy and White Canvas run one too.

5. Pick by MRT line. On the Circle Line, Avant-Garde and Artsy Bugsy sit on the same street, both about 250m from Marymount. On the Thomson-East Coast Line, Artlette, White Canvas and Art Grain are within 300m of Upper Thomson, and Sage is 427m away. Global Art is the one to choose if you live inside the estate and would rather walk.
